South Coast Surgery Center: Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I get crutches?South Coast Orthopaedic Associates, PC, Frequently asked questions

Feel free to borrow them from friends or relatives. We can help fit them to you. They can be purchased from Home Medical or MedEquip or rented from Fred Meyer, Bay Cities Medical Supply, or borrowed from South Coast Hospice. Most patients having meniscectomies only need crutches from 1 day to 1 week.

What is meant by 'clear liquid'?

Allowed up to three hours prior to surgery. Clear liquids are water, cranberry or apple juice, black coffee or tea (no milk or powdered creamers).

Why can't I get a pain pill here after surgery?

The Surgery Center has IV pain medication only. It is a 'short stay' center. Meaning only stays in recovery for approximately 1 hour after surgery. Many surgeons inject a pain killer and/or numbing medication into the surgical site which lasts for a few hours. Many patients have very little to no pain. The IV medication can tide you over till you get home and take a pain pill. You are also encouraged to bring one of your pain pills with you on the day of surgery and it can be taken while you are in the recovery area, if needed.

When can I drink post-op?

As soon as you are fully awake and we determine that you are nausea-free, we will offer you a drink. This usually occurs when you are in 'Phase 2' of recovery (in a lounging chair).

How long will I be in recovery?

If you have general anesthesia, you will be in recovery approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours, depending on the surgery. If you have a regional anesthetic, usually involving sedation, you will be in recovery about 1/2 hour.
